25 Years of BAVirtual

In 1999, the aviation world was rapidly evolving—not only in real skies but also in the digital ones. As the internet opened new frontiers for flight simulation, a visionary named Steve Ellis, a former Royal Air Force member, saw an opportunity to bring realism, structure, and purpose to online flying. What began as a passion project quickly took off: British Airways Virtual (BAV) was born.

Now, in 2025, we proudly celebrate 25 years of BAVirtual—a milestone that reflects not just time, but dedication, innovation, and the incredible community that has kept our virtual skies full.

From Humble Beginnings to Global Recognition

Back in April 2000, BAV took its first flight with a professional-looking website, a small but passionate community, and a vision: to simulate British Airways operations with accuracy and enthusiasm. Within a year, over 900 pilots had joined, making BAV the largest virtual airline in the world.

But with rapid growth came growing pains. Manual PIREP processing became unmanageable, and in May 2001, BAV was temporarily grounded.

Yet from this turbulence came innovation. Under the leadership of Rob Parker and with the technical expertise of Ferry van Aesch, BAV relaunched in September 2001 with a fully automated system. Membership soared, and in 2002, BAV received official recognition from British Airways—a rare and prestigious nod in the virtual aviation world.

A Legacy of Evolution and Resilience

Through every version—BAV I, II, III, and our current Mk4—our virtual airline has evolved to meet the expectations of increasingly sophisticated flight sim technology and pilots alike.

We’ve weathered legal challenges, server issues, and leadership transitions. We’ve mourned the loss of valued community members and celebrated the rise of many into real-world aviation careers. Each chapter in our story has made us stronger, more united, and more determined to remain at the forefront of virtual aviation.

Today’s BAVirtual: Driven by Passion, Grounded in Realism

Our mission today reflects the spirit that started it all:

“BAVirtual inspires and supports experienced flight simulation enthusiasts to grow their skills, confidence, and professionalism—flying true-to-life British Airways schedules and aircraft, while providing supplementary tools and encouragement to continually improve and achieve personal excellence in simulated aviation.”

We are proud to be a home for pilots who value:

  • True-to-Life Flying
  • Continuous Personal Growth
  • Experienced, Supportive Community
  • Professionalism & Respect
  • Recognition of Dedication

Whether you’re an aspiring commercial pilot or a veteran sim flyer, BAV provides a platform where growth, realism, and community come together.

25 Years of BAV: A Celebration to Remember

We couldn’t let this silver anniversary pass without marking it in true Speedbird style. Throughout 2025, we’ve launched a series of special events to honor our heritage and look ahead to the next 25 years:

  • April – Frankfurt Event: We revisited our very first system test flight, letting pilots choose any historic or current aircraft to recreate that seminal journey.
  • May – Long Haul & Short Haul Tours: We took to the skies for a global adventure, flying to 25 iconic British Airways destinations around the world.
  • September – Speedbird 24: Our flagship event returns with more realism and challenge than ever—featuring live dispatcher briefings, sector bidding, and real-time ops for a true-to-life simulation experience.
  • Special Liveries: Limited-edition “25 Years of BAVirtual” liveries are available until November 15th, giving pilots a unique way to commemorate the milestone in the skies.
  • November – Virtual BAV Conference: For the first time, we’re hosting an all-digital conference with insightful talks, Q&A sessions, and real-world aviation guest speakers. Stay tuned for details!

Thank You to Our Pilots—Past, Present, and Future

BAVirtual wouldn’t exist without you—our members. Whether you joined last month or have been here since the early 2000s, your passion for aviation and dedication to realism have shaped who we are.

As we mark 25 years of virtual excellence, we’re not just looking back. We’re planning ahead—with more tools, more realism, and more opportunities to learn, fly, and grow.

So here’s to the next 25 years. May your skies be clear, your landings smooth, and your logbooks ever growing.
